Well once I started looking for a fix for my Xbox 360 RROD, I felt overwhelmed by most of the information to be found. You'll find a gazillion sites, each selling their instruction manuals (usually $24.95. You can get some for free) and next you have the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have discovered the miraculous remedy. The three that I am about to review are what seem like typically the most popular (and sometimes most absurd).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something like this: You take the hard drive off, encapsulate the entire device in a towel to avoid the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on approximately 15 minutes to cook (some instructions suggest 1 hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it works. But why? I haven't heard a reliable reason yet. Here is one of the explanations..."the console gets so sizzling hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the trigger the red lights in the first place"..... Let us discuss a few prospective risks as brought up in the same directions "could perhaps damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The device could catch on fire it gets so hot". I must say I am going to rate this as the 2nd most idiotic Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix of the three in consideration. Advice: Avoid the use of this fix.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I would not even wish to explain how to do this. Basically, a rubbermaid tub is filled with ice water, some vinegar is put in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged within the water/vinegar concoction. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and instantly plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard about a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as lots of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. Really it is quite irresponsible and should be deleted. This fix is the most idiotic fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: You should not even give thought to using this fix for those who value your life.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Fix - This is actually the only reputable fix I've noted thus far. It truly is as permanent as it gets. Do not use it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty.
